Summer Music CampPlans are now underway for this year's Jackson Symphony Summmer Music Camp. The camp is open woodwind, brass and percussion students going into the seventh grade through those who have just graduated from high school. Wind and percussion students must have at least one year of playing experience. The camp is open to string students with at least two years of playing experience and who are at least ten years old. The Jackson Symphony Summer Camp will be held the week of June 9 - 13th at First United Methodist Church 200 S. Students will participate in one of three large ensembles: a string ensemble, a junior high band (for students going into the 7th and 8th grade), and a senior high band (for students going into the 9th - just graduated from high school.) Camp participants will study with a highly qualified, professional staff of area university music professors, public and private school teachers, and members of the Jackson Symphony. The camp day will also include participation in a small chamber ensemble and attendance in a class of the student's choice, such as Introduction to Improvisation, Beginning Piano, Music Appreciation, and Introduction to Conducting. New classes for this year's camp will be announced soon. Registration deadline is May 26th. The cost of camp registration is $175. "Early bird" registration is $150, if the form and payment are postmarked on or before May 1st. Pam Wilensky will serve as this year's camp director. Staff Jason Hackley, who will direct the high school band, is the Director of Bands at Craigmont High School in Memphis, Tennessee. A native Californian, Mr. Hackley graduated from The University of Memphis with a Bachelors of Music in the spring of 2006. In his second year of band directing Mr. Hackley has taken the band to several concert and marching events, all of which the band received excellent ratings. Mr Hackley is also a private trumpet instructor for students ranging from beginning to advanced players. In addition, Mr. Hackley is a program consultant and visual designer for several bands in West Tennessee. His designs have made way from coast to coast, having been performed by schools from California to Virginia. Andrew Earle will direct the junior high band. He is the Director of Bands at Southwind High School in Memphis, TN. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Memphis, Rudi E. Scheidt, in Music Education. Over the last 10 years, he has performed professionally throughout the U.S., Mexico and abroad including the Musikakademie in Marktoberdof, Germany. He has performed with artists such as Kirk Whalum, Ike Turner, Kurt Elling, and Eric Whitacre. He has also served as camp instructor, staff arranger or adjudicator for area middle and high school band programs. Outside his busy school schedule, Mr. Earle teaches privately to beginning through advanced students, primarily low brass. Betty Eubank, who will direct the string orchestra, is a strings instructor with the Memphis City Schools. She holds the B.M. from the U of Mand the M.M. in music education from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. She is an active performer as a member of The Jackson Symphony as well as area chamber groups.
